A Space to Slow Down and Make Sense of Your Experience

I’m Mitsue Karaman, a licensed psychotherapist offering culturally responsive, trauma-informed therapy for individuals and couples in California and New Hampshire.

Therapy can be a space to slow down, take a breath, and make sense of your experiences in a way that feels more grounded and clear. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful and capable, yet find themselves feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure how to create space for their own needs.

My Perspective

I have always been drawn to understanding how people make sense of their experiences, especially across different cultures, identities, and relationships. This curiosity has guided how I navigate the world and ultimately led me to becoming a therapist.

My work is shaped by all of my lived experiences, starting with my multicultural upbringing as a third culture kid, Japanese heritage, and experience as an immigrant Asian American. Living between cultures has given me a deep awareness of how identity and belonging are shaped over time, often in complex and subtle ways.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in leadership roles within global corporate and tech startup environments. Through this work, I experienced firsthand the pressures many of us carry—balancing performance, responsibility, and expectations, often while navigating cultural and relational contexts.

Together, these experiences inform how I listen and how I work. I attend not only to what is spoken, but also to what may be harder to name, particularly when shaped by cultural expectations, professional demands, or long-held roles.

I also value supporting the next generation of therapists, and offer a small number of reduced-fee spaces for graduate students in counseling and related fields.
